The Team

Our Journey and Passion

Skinart is a family-run body-art training business. Our teaching grew from working-studio experience and covers tattooing, piercing, permanent makeup, microblading and related subjects. The current team and course arrangements are described below.

Gary’s journey began in 2001 when he opened his first tattoo studio in Ballito, KZN. Just eight months later, he expanded by opening his second studio, followed by several more. In those early days, finding experienced artists was challenging, so Gary took it upon himself to train new talent.

Gary developed structured lessons from his experience teaching in a working studio. Study introduces techniques; practical work, feedback and assessment help learners develop control over time. Compare a course and an apprenticeship by the supervision, practice opportunities and assessment each provides.

Skinart is a family-run training business. Tristan teaches in-person tattoo training in New Zealand; Gill teaches piercing and permanent makeup, and Maxine provides piercing training in Christchurch. Gary teaches tattooing and PMU in South Africa, while Janet teaches piercing and PMU. Zane manages the business and develops its digital systems. Confirm the trainer, location and next available dates for your chosen course with the team.

Our students have gone on to open studios across South Africa, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Angola, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, and beyond. Whether you aim to start your own business, earn extra income, or explore a new art form, our courses are designed for you.

The studio background described on this site includes earlier South African locations. For current studio enquiries, use the Skinart studio website; those locations are separate from New Zealand training venues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Choose Skinart?

At Skinart, we specialize in providing a comprehensive training experience in tattooing, permanent makeup, microblading, tattoo removal, and body piercing. If you’re wondering whether you have what it takes to embark on this exciting career path, know that it’s a journey filled with discovery and creativity.

Can You Really Learn These Skills in a Few Days?

A short in-person course provides focused teaching and supervised practice. Developing consistent skills takes further practice, feedback and assessment; attending for a few days does not by itself establish readiness to work independently. Ask what preparation, practical work and follow-up support your selected course includes.

Advice for Aspiring Young Artists

For young aspiring artists, taking art classes in high school or through a local community center can be incredibly beneficial. These classes help develop crucial art skills such as scale, proportion, and shading, all essential for success in the tattoo and body art industry.
